England beat West Indies by 8 wickets
02
nd Innings England
Right then, that's all from this clash of heavyweights where England lived up to the tag of the defending champions. Jos Buttler and Co. will need to keep this intensity up as they face the unbeaten Proteas next, while the West Indies will be looking to get their first points of the Super 8 when they take on fellow hosts, the USA. The Super 8 action in the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup continues on Thursday, June 20, when two Asian sides, India and Afghanistan, lock horns at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. The first ball will be bowled at 8 pm IST (2.30 pm GMT), but as always, you can join us in advance for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!
Jos Buttler, the skipper of England says it's an important win and it was a really good performance by the boys with both bat and ball. Appreciates the team saying they prepared well and performed as a group. Says it was a decent total and they had to be at their best to chase it down. Appreciates Jonny Bairstow and says he really took off in the middle overs and also says that the partnership between Bairstow and Salt was pivotal. Adds they bowled to their plans. Says he brought Jofra Archer in the 16th over with Pooran and Russell coming in, and he restricted the run flow. Says you need to bring your best bowler and shut them. Also appreciates Adil Rashid and says he has been excellent all the time and has been an important player for a long time. Says he has a lot of variations. Further adds that people say you learn when you lose but he believes that you learn when you win as well, and concludes by saying they will reflect on the positives and put it to bed and move on to the next one.
The captain of West Indies, Rovman Powell feels that they were 15-20 runs short. Feels that they could have done better with the ball. States that they are normally good with the bat in the last 5 overs and lauds England for the way they bowled. Tells that they need to evaluate and take positives as a batting group. Hopes that Brandon King can pull through as he is an important player for them. Reckons that they strayed away from their bowling plans against Phil Salt and could have done better. Ends by saying that their destiny is still in their hands and will look to continue playing good cricket.
Phil Salt is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his blistering knock of 87 runs from 47 balls. Says he really liked it. Adds that they are not looking far too ahead and he's just happy to contribute to the team's victory. Mentions that it was a little tricky against the spinners in the mid-overs and it was all about constructing the chase. Adds it was a pretty good wicket to bat on. On being asked about Jonny Bairstow's innings, Salt says, Bairstow's innings was very crucial. Adds once Jos Buttler got out, he had to bat through and Jonny Bairstow took calculated risks in the middle. Ends up saying he is delighted with the win.
Time for the presentation ceremony….
Earlier in the game, England opted to bowl first but were a bit wayward with the new ball and could not start as they would have liked. Despite some ungainly shots, Brandon King and Johnson Charles ensured a decent start for the West Indies. King had to walk off the field due to what seemed to be a groin issue, but Nicholas Pooran quickly got into his stride and maintained the momentum. In the middle phase though, Charles and Pooran struggled to find their rhythm as England put a squeeze on. A breezy cameo from the skipper, Rovman Powell, helped the West Indies regain momentum. The loss of Powell, Pooran, and Russell in successive overs prevented the West Indies from maximizing the back end of their innings. Thanks to a late flourish from Sherfane Rutherford, the West Indies managed to reach a total of 180. For England, Adil Rashid was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 1 for 21 from his 4 overs.
As for the West Indies, their juggernaut has come to a halt with their first defeat of the competition. When they reflect on this loss, it will be evident that it was their batting that let them down more than their bowling. When you play as many as 51 dot balls, you end up on the losing side more often than not. Having managed only 43 runs in the last 5 overs of their batting effort, West Indies knew that they had left a few runs out there with the bat. As a result, wickets in the Powerplay were crucial for them. Akeal Hosein was miserly as ever from his end but the runs leaked from the other end. After a wicketless Powerplay, Roston Chase helped the West Indies regain some control with a couple of quiet overs and the wicket of Jos Buttler. However, they could never really stem the flow of runs. Jonny Bairstow put them under pressure, and then Phil Salt hammered the final nails in the coffin, sealing the game for England. Moreover, Nicholas Pooran dropped a tough chance off Phil Salt when he was on 7, and it indeed proved costly.
A statement win from England to kickstart their Super 8 campaign! If there were any doubts about the defending champions looking at their first couple of games, they have set them aside with this commanding display. England have shown they are here to defend their crown with a dominant performance against a strong West Indies side. In their pursuit of 181 runs, England were off to a steady start. Jos Buttler got a couple of boundaries away and by doing so, he allowed Phil Salt to settle into his innings. Through a 67-run opening stand, England had the requisite platform to gun down the total. Sent in at number 3, Moeen Ali batted with intent but could not hang around for long. Salt struggled to find the fence in the middle phase but Jonny Bairstow took all the pressure off him. He soon took the game by the scruff of the neck as England began to pull away from West Indies. Sensing the opportunity to put the game to bed, Salt took apart Romario Shepherd for a 30-run over, the most expensive over for a West Indies bowler in T20 World Cups.

st Innings West Indies
We are back for England's reply! The two umpires make their way out to the middle. The West Indian players are out in a last-minute huddle with the skipper Rovman Powell offering words of wisdom before they scatter to the field. Phil Salt and Jos Buttler are the two openers for England. And as usual, the West Indies is going with spin early on. Akeal Hosein to open the bowling attack. And, here we go…
… THE RUN CHASE …
Right then, the West Indies have put on a decent total on the board. England has all the requisite firepower to chase it down as they boast an explosive batting order. 180 plus was chased down in the first game at this venue, so, West Indies will aim to get a couple of quick wickets early on and exert the pressure from the word go and get an upper hand. Stay tuned as the run chase is up next shortly.
Adil Rashid is in for a flash interview. He feels that they bowled exceptionally well as a bowling unit. Reckons that 180 is a par score. States that it was just another day for him when he tried to express himself well.
England's bowlers started really well though. Reece Topley and Mark Wood were hitting some good areas, getting that extra bounce and movement. But try as they might, they just couldn't break through that opening partnership. So Buttler turned to Jofra Archer and Sam Curran, but even they couldn't provide that elusive breakthrough in the first six overs. Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid were brought in after the fielding restrictions were off, and they really squeezed the runs in the middle overs with their disciplined lines and lengths. Moeen Ali finally got the breakthrough, dismissing Charles, and Liam Livingstone too, struck soon after in a quick interval. Jofra Archer came back and got that prized scalp of Pooran, capitalizing on the pressure created by the spinners. Rashid also chipped in with a wicket as England clawed their way back. Sam Curran bowled an excellent penultimate over giving just six off it.
West Indies manage to reach 180 courtesy of Sherfane Rutherford's quickfire cameo in the backend, which might play a pivotal role in the game. A decent outing for the bowlers of England as they managed to keep their opponents below 200. Johnson Charles and Brandon King played it safe early on, just getting a feel for the pitch. But they didn't let the scoring rate stagnate, finding the ropes whenever they could. King had a few nervy and edgy moments but managed to hang around before retiring hurt. It was a solid Powerplay for the Windies, with no wickets down and scoring hovering at around 9-10 an over. Nicholas Pooran continued his great form, complementing Charles' patient approach with some aggressive stroke play. The Windies were cruising until Charles fell in the 12th over trying to accelerate. In came Powell who went berserk, smashing 36 off just 17 balls before perishing. Andre Russell couldn't wreak much damage, and then Pooran too, followed soon after quickly and the Windies lost 3 wickets for just 6 runs, putting a dent in their scoring rate. Sherfane Rutherford played a crucial cameo in the backend and helped the West Indies post a competitive total on the board.

Done with the national anthems, and we are all set to go. The two umpires have made their way out to the middle, as have the two openers of the West Indies. Jos Buttler leads his troops out to the centre and soon the players take their places on the field. It will be Brandon King and Johnson Charles to open the innings for the West Indies. Reece Topley will kickstart proceedings with the new ball for England. The countdown is done and dusted. Away we go…
Before we get going in this heavyweight bout, the players, along with the mascots, will lineup for their respective national anthems. It will be England's national anthem first followed by that of the West Indies.
Phil Salt is in for a chat. He says that they are scheduled to play two games here and it will be about assessing the conditions as quickly as they could. Feels that the side that does that well will give themselves the best chance. Reckons that it is about playing their best of game of cricket and thinking what does the team need from them. On their top four batters all being right-handed, he feels that right-hand left-hand combination does not matter much and if you are there, you are the man to get the job done.
PITCH REPORT – Natalie Germanos is pitchside. She informs that pitch number 2 will be used for this game and this is the second time this surface is being used. Informs that 63 metres and 72 metres are the dimensions of the square boundaries with a 77-metre hit down the ground. Adds that an 18 kph breeze is blowing across and the two teams will have to consider it. Ian Bishop joins her and says that despite there being a few scratch marks around the good length, this is a good surface. Shares that the pitch has been rolled in and watered nicely. Adds that the surface is very hard with very little live grass. Tells that this surface has seen a bit of extra bounce but the pitch has played true and batters can trust the bounce.
Rovman Powell, the skipper of West Indies, says they would have bowled first as well but says it is a good wicket and is hopeful that the batters will step up and score big. Adds they have rolled the surface well and says it is generally a good wicket to bat on. Tells that they have been playing good cricket overall and says they will naturally get good support. Informs two changes, Roston Chase comes in for Shai Hope, and Romario Shepherd replaces Obed McCoy.
The captain of England, Jos Buttler says that they will bowl first. Adds that they watched the last game here and the wicket looked good. States that with the strong breeze, they fancy their chances of chasing. Informs that Mark Wood comes in for Chris Jordan and that Liam Livingstone is fit to take a full part in this game. Shares that this is that part of the tournament where you want to be as you get to play top teams. Ends by saying that he is looking forward to playing in what will be a good atmosphere.

TOSS UPDATE – The coin flip lands in the favor of England, and Jos Buttler elects to BOWL first.
England were the second team in their group to qualify after Australia and had their game against Scotland rained off. They literally had to rely on the Aussies beating Scotland to squeeze into the Super 8s. England hasn't really been at their best since last year's ODI World Cup. But finally making it to the next round should give them a much-needed confidence boost. Jos Buttler and Co. are aiming to put up a strong all-round performance and to step it up as they enter the critical phase. Their last two wins though, the one against Oman where they decimated the opposition with the bat and ball, and then beating Namibia convincingly, displayed that everyone stepped up, showing signs that they might be getting their groove back. And with Jofra Archer back in the mix, their bowling attack just got a whole lot spicier. It's a massive clash between two heavyweight teams, and it's gonna be an absolute nail-biter for sure. Can the West Indies keep their unbeaten streak going, or will England finally get one over their Caribbean rivals? The toss and teams are just around the corner. Stick around.
The Men in Maroon, West Indies, are firing on all cylinders right now, looking straight-up unbeatable. They're rolling into this match on an eight-game winning streak. Sure, their couple of wins in this World Cup over PNG and New Zealand were nail-biters and had a few anxious moments, but them decimating Uganda and the highly-rated Afghanistan proved they've really hit their stride. The two-time champs are peaking at the right time. Nicholas Pooran has been having a dream run for a year and a half or so and has led the batting unit with sheer consistency backed by ruthless power-hitting at will. His 98 in the previous game just proved his flawlessness with the bat. Seeing him, the other batters too have displayed form and with a perfect blend of brutal all-rounders, the West Indian batting line-up has no wrinkles as of now. The bowlers have done their part as well, with both seamers and spinners stepping up and contributing heavily. Now as their challenge further elevates as they face the defending champs, the Windies will be expected to put on a strong fight.
Greetings, cricket aficionados! Welcome everyone joining us for our coverage of Match number 2 of the Super 8 in this ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, 2024. This clash features the co-hosts and the dangerous West Indies taking on the defending champions, England. The Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium at Gros Islet, St. Lucia will play the host to this marquee clash. Both these sides are competing for their third title respectively.
… MATCH DAY …
The 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup has now reached its second stage which is the Super Eight stage and 8 teams have been divided into two groups of four with two from each group advancing into the semifinals. In the second match of Group 2, hosts West Indies will take on England at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St. Lucia. West Indies remained spotless in the initial group stage with four wins out of four but that final win against Afghanistan will give them a lot of confidence heading into the next stage of the competition. A couple of nervy performances against Papua New Guinea and New Zealand but in the last game, most of the batting line-up was on fire. Nicholas Pooran was the star of the show and he seems to have found a second wind in the last year or so after being dropped from captaincy and struck a sensational 98 to help his side post a total of well over 200 runs. The bowling line-up was also on song as they bundled out Afghanistan for just 114 runs inside 17 overs. West Indies did play against England earlier in the year where the scores were pretty high across the board and we saw some sensational batting. England though come into the Super Eights on the back of a nervy campaign. Their first game against Scotland was washed out and then they were well beaten by arch-rivals Australia in the next game. They did bounce back with a thumping win against Oman. In their final game against Namibia, rain yet again played a big part and almost threatened their exit but the match did get completed and England did manage to win well in the end to secure their spot in the Super Eights. A lot will depend on that deep batting line-up they have but they will be aware of the threat the opposition possesses, especially given that the Windies know the conditions pretty well. Jos Buttler will look to rally his troops as they look to shift gears quickly in a bid to defend their title. Can the hosts topple the champions and pick up a huge win? Or will England rise to the challenge and beat West Indies at their own game? Only time will tell.
